I have a question about having excessively big tanks...like 30 gallons for hatchlings...would they have a hard time catching their food in such a large enviornment?? Would they grow better, and possibly not be as nippy towards eachothers?
Thanks Blazing Diamond and anyone else who may want to answer my question |

Thank you for your post, sierra__lizard.
In such a large enviornment (in this case being a 30 gallon tank), they would have a large chance of having a difficult time catching their food. If you had multiple hatchlings, others would find food much easier than others. One idea is keeping hatchlings in a smaller tank, a comfortable amount for a small tank such as a ten gallon until they are large enough to be able to easily hunt down and catch food in a 30 gallon tank. They might grow easier, not be stunted at all, and might even grow bigger than usual in such a large tank, and in fact, having a tank that big is a great idea, that is, if you are willing to remove each Alligator Lizard at feeding time, put them in their own individual containers and feed them at feeding time to make sure catching the food isn't difficult, and they all get the correct amounts. That's the method we use with ours. Always make sure each lizard is equally nourished as far as food and vitamins go . Also, in such a large tank they would have more space, be more comfortable, and there would be a much smaller chance for them to be nippy towards eachother in such a large enviornment.
It is overall and excellent idea if you are willing to feed them seperatly at feeding time. This can be either an easy task or a tough tank depending on the number of lizards you have.
